No, no, no!
You need to get a floor-length, form-fitting dress. Nothing puffy and no mermaid dresses. Unless it is a very conservative system (NAMiss or American Co-Ed), you should have a slit on either side of your legs or in the front if you feel comfortable walking in it. Trains are great if you can walk with them. Whites and bright colors are usually winners. Stay away from browns and off-whites. If you are very thin, do not wear black. It will make you look too thin. (Vice versa if you’d like to look thinner.)
Halter tops and strapless dresses are nice as well. Occasionally, a regular-strapped dress will be okay. Google has LOTS of pageant advice. Jovani is a great company for national pageant dresses, but they are SUPER expensive, so check some out and look for similar dresses.
